Continuous Data Replication (CDR): get the data out of the building for reliable disaster protection

Everyone hopes it never happens to their business, but you hear it all too often: a company’s primary site goes down due to a blackout, natural disaster, or man-made catastrophe, and there is no disaster recovery plan in place – or what supposedly existed fails. SANTap users never again have to lose sleep about such a scenario by deploying the Synchronism Continuous Data Replication (CDR) solution. Synchronism CDR replicates primary data to a secondary, remote site across any distance via IP to heterogeneous storage, ensuring that mission-critical applications can be resumed rapidly at the disaster recovery site with minimal data loss in the event of a sudden unplanned (or planned) outage.

Most replication products do not offer the ability to maintain historical replication data, and can therefore be susceptible to a rolling disaster, wherein a primary site is gradually failing but the failure remains undetected for an extended period of time. To protect against this vulnerability, the combination of TimeMark delta-snapshot and Snapshot Agent technologies in the CDR solution enables administrators to maintain multiple remote replica versions (with 100% data consistency) at the disaster recovery site to guard against rolling disasters. During a rolling disaster, most replication solutions can allow corruption to persist undetected until it is too late. However, when a disaster is finally recognized in a SANTap environment protected by Synchronism CDR, Synchronism’s TimeMark delta-snapshots can be used to almost instantly roll back the remote copy to a known good point in time. These multiple mountable snapshots also can be leveraged to perform windowless backup to tape (see next section) and to support data mining or application development tasks.

Once it is time to revive the primary site after a disaster has passed, Synchronism’s patent pending, unique reverse synchronization process intelligently moves only the newer (post-disaster) data from the DR site back to the original primary site. Synchronism facilitates this “role reversal” by scanning for differences and transferring back only the delta changes, minimizing the time necessary to re-establish the primary site.

Synchronisms CDR employs sophisticated I/O, CPU ,and network throttling to achieve efficiency and reliability that are in line with enterprise IT performance requirements. To protect against connectivity failures and interruptions, Synchronism’s auto resume mechanism sustains replication and even adapts according to the environment to achieve optimal and predictable performance. Additionally, data compression maximizes network bandwidth utilization to minimize connectivity costs, while encryption ensures end-to-end data security during replication between the primary and DR site (in either direction). Synchronism CDR provides administrators with a feature rich solution for designing a disaster recovery strategy that meets even the most rigid recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO).
